A new installation combining audio, video, photography, lighting and surveillance with a computer program designed to respond to one's desires. Imagine a "smart" room that can access information and supply your every need within only four walls. This "benevolent machine" is becoming a reality in an age of mechanical authority. Commanded by a technological dialogue inspired by characters in Alice in Wonderland, Scher examines this hi-tech cabaret from the perspective of both child and adult, innocence and authority.

This is the gallery's last exhibition in SoHo. Julia Scher has set up surveillance cameras in our new space at 525 West 24th Street and has been recording the demolition and construction of the new gallery which will be incorporated into the exhibition. Julia's link between the old and new galleries seems an especially appreciative and poignant farewell to a neighborhood that has been so generous to us. Although we are looking forward to our move to Chelsea we are sad to be leaving this venerable neighborhood. Our scheduled opening in Chelsea is May 22nd with an exhibition of new work by Andrea Zittel.
