This is the first solo exhibition of Gillian Carnegie's work in the United States.
The work of Gillian Carnegie introduces into the traditional genre of landscape painting undertones of anxiety, conveyed not by the subject matter but through the paint and its obsessive handling. The figurative works reverse the familiar face of portraiture, implicating the viewer with a perversion; one that is at the heart of her work. The uncanny in these works is not illustrated but embodied, both in the manner of their making and through an acceptance of the convention of painting, whether it be still life, landscape or the nude.
In 1999 Gillian Carnegie showed at the Cabinet, London and was included in Scorpio Rising at Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin and Surfacing at the ICA.
